PTFE - “Click” here to buy online
PTFE is the acronym for an engineering plastic called Polytetrafluroethylene to be more exact. A quite amazing material discovered in 1938, it was the worlds first high temperature engineering plastics, now more commercially known as Teflon.
PTFE is basically a wonderful high performance engineering thermoplastic which has fantastic chemical and heat resistance, is offers easy machining and has been described as the most slippery plastic known to man.
It has a very wide constant operating temperature range from as low as -180 degrees C up to as high as +250° C.
Everyone at some time in their lives will have come across PTFE, probably unknowingly but is popular in food, chemical and high temperature industries.
As an engineering plastic, PTFE is available in sheet and rod form. The sheet can be purchased as thin as 0.25mm and up to 100mm thick. Rods are available in a large range of sizes from 4mm diameter up to 200mm diameter. Tube is also available, as is etched sheet which makes bonding to the material a possibility.
As is the case with most engineering thermoplastics, PTFE will usually come in slightly oversize, which helps when trying to machine to a specific size. PTFE was once described as one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century.
PTFE, 70 years old and still cutting edge.
