Polyvinylchloride - Abbreviated to PVC.
It is a general purpose engineering thermoplastic that is hard, rigid with very good electrical properties, although PVC is widely used in the building and construction industry, PVC has a very important position in the Engineering Plastics sector. PVC is economical, easy to bond and thermoform. As an engineering plastic there are numerous applications including cladding, chemical tanks and machine parts.
As well as being tough, PVC has very low water absorption, is easy to bond and weld and has impressive electrical insulation.
Within the Engineering plastics industry, the most common colour available is Grey, but it is also available to order in Red and Black and is produced in either rod or sheet form.
Common applications for PVC sheet would be ducting, fabrication and clean room or food preparation area cladding, PVC rod applications would include conveyor rollers, pulleys, jigs and fixtures.
Although mot currently recycled, PVC recycling is currently being developed in Europe and Japan.
Hopefully it will one day become technically possible.
