Tufnol, often referred to as Bakerlite after its founder Dr Leo Baekelund first appeared in the early 1900’s. Tufnol has since become an extremely popular engineering plastic due to it being economical, strong, durable and its low moisture absorption. Tufnol is now available in a host of different grades, making its use very widespread. Because Tufnol is a laminated material consisting of multiple layers of impregnated thin sheet material that are heated and compressed into a solid material once cured, it becomes a very stable and rigid plastic.
We stock a range of Tufnol grades that are available as either SRBB grade or SRBF.
SRBP: Synthetic Resin Bonded Paper (1P/13 Tufnol)
Synthetic Resin Bonded Paper is phenolic paper laminated engineering plastic is the general purpose grade and used for less demanding low electrical insulation such as jigs fixtures and tooling. It is fairly strong, very rigid and represents excellent value for money and is much more durable than other paper grades.
SRBP: Synthetic Resin Bonded Paper (Kite Tufnol)
SRBP Synthetic Resin Bonded Paper is a grade of Tufnol which is a high grade product and an excellent engineering plastic that is a great electrical insulator and is typically used in switchgear and in applications that demand a high degree of electrical insulation.
SRBF: Synthetic Resin Bonded Fabric (Whale Tufnol)
This phenolic cotton laminated engineering plastic is relatively easy to machine into a finished product, very strong and offers excellent wear resistance. We stock Probably the most commonly used cotton fabric grade, Whale brand. This is available in both sheet and rod form and is commonly used for slideways, wear blocks, gears, pulleys and some marine applications.
Tufnol is a fabulous material which still remains very popular today, even 100+ years since being formulated. We specialise and stock large quantities of the three most popular grades of Tufnol, but we also supply many of the other grades such as Carp, Bear, 10G40, 6F45 etc. These and other such grades can be classed as high performance laminates and plastics with properties that are unique to this production process.
